I hate buying used cars. In fact, I hate it almost as much as I hate the stereotypical used car salesman. In 2025, I think we should all expect fair, upfront prices without haggling, and sellers who are simply honest about what they’re offering. While hunting for a first car for a teen, I visited the usual suspects: one dealer clearly using Photoshop to make rust look like “patina”, and another massive “business” not even registered for VAT or at Companies House. Confidence inspiring? Hardly. Then I spoke to Andy at Thames Fleet Purchasing. Refreshingly, he told me the negatives about the car I was interested in before I even headed over to view it. When I arrived, he reinforced those points and was open about what he did and didn’t know about its history. No seedy vibe, no hard sell, no nonsense. He even helped me keep the potential purchase secret from my teen (a near-impossible mission) and has been flexible about storing the vehicle until collection. I made the token attempt at haggling — which I loathe — but Andy shut that down quickly, explaining that he simply doesn’t work that way. Honestly, I was relieved. The car was already sensibly priced, and the transparency was worth more than a token discount. As an obsessive checker of details, I also looked into the company background. He’s been in business a long time — no dodgy “phoenix company” tricks here. That alone tells you a lot. I’ve not even collected the car yet, but for the first time ever I feel confident about buying from a used car dealer. If only the rest of the industry could take notes.
